ADVANCE-ON - Introduction

Our thanks go to Servier for making ADVANCE-ON possible. And our thanks go to so many of our investigators around the world who supported this initiative and whose strong support was critical in convincing Servier that the study was feasible and practical. This will mean over a dozen years of continuous support from Servier, for ADVANCE and then ADVANCE-ON, dating back to the year 2000, and we do appreciate that strong commitment.

Now that the study is under way, we are delighted to have re-established contact with all our ADVANCE friends and look forward to many more years of collaboration. We have had a fantastic response from sites confirming their participation in ADVANCE-ON and know that most of you are well underway with finalising contracts and approaching ethics committees for approval. We do appreciate your continuing support.

We would now like to take the opportunity to introduce Dr Sophia Zoungas, who has taken on the role of International Clinical Study Coordinator for ADVANCE-ON. Sophia is an academic endocrinologist with extensive expertise in clinical trials and epidemiology. Her current primary appointment is as a conjoint Senior Research Fellow, at the George Institute for Global Health and School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University. She also currently spends half a day per week working in the Department of Diabetes at St Vincent’s hospital as a consultant endocrinologist. Sophia is a big asset to ADVANCE-ON and we are delighted to have her on board.

I am very pleased to have joined the ADVANCE-ON team. As a previous coinvestigator at one of the LCCs in Victoria, Australia, I have had direct experience of the ADVANCE study and am fully aware of the challenges faced by study sites. Now as International Clinical Coordinator for ADVANCE-ON, it is my role to provide input into the protocol and advice, direction and support to Helen and Ana from the International Coordinating Centre. I am also very happy to field any questions that sites may have about the study design, rationale, or conduct.
